Good Crew, Key Crew
Chris Garbacz

If you spend any time on OPB (Other People’s Boats), or want to, you’ve likely contemplated how you can best fit in. What makes a key crew member? What are the unique challenges that you face as you endeavor to find your place in a crew – and keep it? Chris will explore how you can improve your crew experience for yourself and for your skipper, discuss the choreography on board, and how the best teams work seamlessly together from bow to stern. Included in the class will be hands-on experience with winching as a team sport!
Chris grew up along the shores of Lake Michigan, dinghy sailing with her dad. After years away from the water, she wanted back in and wanted to race! She happened upon Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club’s Sailing Crew Training Program in 2005. Since then, she has raced thousands of miles including 9 Chicago & 7 Bayview Mac Races, the Conch Republic Cup Regatta (Key West to Cuba), and the Heineken Regatta in St. Maarten. She returned to CCYC as an instructor, and this spring will mark her 5th year since she took the reins. She and her team pour their love of sailing into educating 30-40 new crew each spring.
