Protest: Why You Should
Alice Martin

Picture
Once you’ve made it through the (often) chaotic start, now it’s time to race your race. Explore the strategies that the best racing sailors use to achieve advantage over their competitors. Review the tactics that should be considered in choosing your approach depending on the course configuration, winds and point of sail, and your knowledge of the competitors.

Alice has been riding on boats since age 3. At 8 she was one of eight children at Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club in Cleveland who were presented with a sailing dinghy handmade
by their dad! During her teenage years, Alice raced on small boats, like the Lightning and Thistle, on Lake Erie. She was a member of the University of Michigan Sailing Club. Since moving to Chicago in 1975, Alice has owned a 16-foot Hobie Cat, a Pearson 27, a J/30, a C&C 37R, a Sydney 38, and a Beneteau 36.7. She has chartered and raced sailboats in Croatia, the Caribbean, Florida, and Newport to Bermuda. Last year she competed in her 25th Chicago to Mackinac Race as a skipper and was initiated into the Old Goat Society this month. She is a member of the Chicago Yacht Club Offshore Committee and of Columbia Yacht Club. Alice has presented to the WOW Group at CYC, and published several articles on chartering boats, crew management, and other sailing topics. Having actively competed in international sailboat racing for many years, Alice knows the protest system. She has participated in protests herself and also served on judging panels. She benefits from discussions about the Racing Rules of Sailing with her husband Ted Jones, who is an active US Sailing Judge.
