Advanced Sail Trim
Cate Mueller
Proper trim matters whether you’re racing or cruising. Explore advanced trim tools for optimizing mainsail and headsail trim in varying wind and wave conditions. We’ll explore how to keep a boat moving in light or heavy air or critical conditions; how communication between trimmer and helmsman can be considered trimming; and when to apply the “rules of thumb.” Learn how halyard tension, boom vang, and lead adjustment are your extra tools.

Cate Muller learned to sail at the age of eight, fell in love with the sport, and hasn’t looked back. Her focus is competitive racing on her family’s 40.7. They have been successful inshore, placing in many North American’s, and offshore, having won their division in the Queen’s Cup and been on the podium in five of her last eight Chicago Mac Races. In 2019, Cate participated in Annapolis Yacht Club’s Double-Handed Distance race, which was an Olympic test event. She is also keen to race smaller boats including J70s on the winter circuit and her J22 in Annapolis. Recent top finishes include 2nd at the 2018 J22 World Championships and 2nd in the Chicago NOOD 40.7 Fleet.
